IWYP’s Vision

IWYP’s vision responds to the urgent needs to increase wheat yields across the world to provide food security and the social stabilities, local and global, that come from adequate, affordable food. It embodies the bringing together of state-of-the-art knowledge and technologies in wheat genetics, genomics, germplasm, phenomics, modeling, databases and AI/Machine learning to achieve germplasm with enhanced performances in relevant agricultural environments. It targets public and private sector research and breeding programs to create larger positive impacts than exist at present.

IWYP’s GOAL

To achieve this goal requires the IWYP Program to:

  • Effectively double the current average rate of genetic yield gain
  • Enable this impact by exploiting the best relevant science base worldwide
  • Deliver by incorporating discoveries / traits and evaluating them in elite germplasm in relevant environments
  • Exploit its discoveries and improved germplasm by transferring them to leading relevant breeding programs around the world, both public and private and thereby enabling them to enhance yields and resilience of crops in farmers’ fields locally

Why now and why IWYP?

  • Because this need is urgent and not enough progress is evident
  • Demands on wheat are increasing rapidly and not enough progress is evident
  • Gains in breeding programs have slowed to dangerous levels relative to future demand
  • Because others are not focused on this specific aspect of yield gain
  • There is interest in wheat from the private sector and governments
  • Unprecedented progress in underpinning science
  • New technologies and scientific discoveries offer new possibilities
  • Discoveries-to-pre-breeding-to-varieties and evaluation in many environments takes time

IWYP’s overall Strategy for Success

  • Employ state-of-the-art knowledge and technologies to generate scientific breakthroughs
  • Combine the best ideas from anywhere in the world
  • Focus on creating significant added value and impact
  • Operate an integrated research Program with a unique open-access structure, inspired and led by an independent management team, linked with the private sector and developed with state-of-the-art technologies
  • Employ project management practices so that the coordinated overall Program is metrically driven to enable planning, tracking and assessing progress based on timelines, milestones, and deliverables
  • Coordinate discoveries and outputs, linking breakthroughs to validation and assessment and delivery to breeding programs.
  • Maintain focus on delivery and impact with a high degree of urgency
